International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women

1h7NZzsQ.pngHamburg, November 2019: APPLICATIO supports the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, proclaimed by the UN on 25 November. Despite the adoption of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) by the UN General Assembly in 1979, violence against women and girls remains a global problem.

APPLICATIO, e.g.  supports GIZ in developing a training programme for the police in Zambia to strengthen them in their fight against violence against women and to prevent it beforehand.

On 20 December 1993 the General Assembly adopted the Declaration on the Elimination of Violence against Women by Resolution 48/104, paving the way for the elimination of violence against women and girls worldwide.  Finally, on 7 February 2000, the General Assembly adopted Resolution 54/134, which officially declares 25 November to be the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and calls on governments, international organisations and NGOs to unite and organise activities to raise public awareness of the issue each year on that day.

However, there is still a long way to go: so far, only two out of three countries have banned domestic violence, while 37 countries in the world still exempt rapists from prosecution if they are married to the victim or eventually marry him, and 49 countries currently have no laws to protect women from domestic violence.
